Gladys Mullenix Black Theatre
520 N. Main St., Meadville, PA 16335
Tickets for the production, in the Gladys Mullenix Black Theatre in the Vukovich Center for Communication Arts, can be purchased by phone at (814) 332-3414 or online at allegheny.edu/playshop.
The production is devised and directed by Katie Beck, a 2014 graduate of Allegheny. It tells the stories of three asylum seekers who crossed the southern border of the United States. The script is based on actual interviews with asylum seekers from Honduras, Somalia and Guatemala, Beck says. The production explores the legal system, the streets of Central America’s violence-plagued Northern Triangle and the hearts of those seeking a new home, she says.
Beck, who is the artistic director of the Gum-Dip Theatre in Akron, Ohio, says she returns to Meadville often. “I still consider Meadville my second home,” she says. “Allegheny College and the Meadville community shaped my artistic vision for driving social change through the arts. I am thrilled to be returning to collaborate and share this timely and difficult piece—one that is both representative and reflective of the current state of our country.”
The cast includes sophomore Yessenia Guevara, junior Conor Kennedy, junior Amir Megherhi, sophomore Luis Mendoza, sophomore Manuel Soares III and sophomore Mary Walsh-Hilf.
Following each performance, audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion about whether safe passage should have been granted to the characters in the play.
